Con la premisa de más música luego de un EP y dos singles, nos comunicamos con los Abrade The Earth, originarios de Ontario, Canadá, con su particular manera de hacer metalcore progresivo. Esto es lo que tienen para decir…
RC- ¿Cómo fue el proceso compositivo del EP que lanzaron el año pasado?
ATE- Fue algo lento en el comienzo, ya que estábamos intentando de encontrar nuestro sonido y estilo para nuestro lanzamiento debut. Una vez que pudimos determinar cómo queríamos sonar, el resto se desenvolvió de una manera muy fácil ya que todos teníamos experiencias previas en bandas de metal. Hicimos mucha experimentación con otros elementos musicales como sintetizadores, pianos, reverbs espaciados, samples y más. Nos encontramos muy felices con ello y que también ayudaría a sonar más personales y distintos a las otras bandas.
RC- ¿Cómo dieron con el nombre Abrade The Earth?
ATE- Yo (Jared) estaba en la secundaria y siempre supe que quería estar en una banda. En mi notebook, había escrito todos mis nombres favoritos para usar en el futuro y Abrade The Earth encabezaba esa lista. Pedí el nombre en Facebook porque quería reservarlo para usarlo cuando pudiera. James se fijó la URL en mi página y me preguntó qué era. Ni bien le respondí, tomamos la decisión de usar el nombre.
RC- ¿Cuáles son sus sentimientos acerca de «Vague Light»? ¿De dónde surgió la influencia para la letra y cómo lo compararías con las canciones del primer EP?
ATE- «Vague Light» está inspirada en el existencialismo que sentimos cuando alcanzamos ciertos cruces en la vida. La canción habla desde la perspectiva de alguien que inicialmente cree estar por encima de la redención y en realidad está condenado a una existencia de sufrimiento sin sentido. Al irse desarrollando, el personaje principal vuelve de la desesperación por un sentimiento ambiguo de esperanza que viene con un perdón interno y aceptación. Es una canción importante para nosotros porque expresa sentimientos que cada uno vivió en distintos puntos de nuestras vidas. Tiene un sentir bastante cercano comparado con nuestro primer EP, en donde usábamos más fantasía imaginada que letras realistas, trajimos el espectáculo a lo instrumental y algunos riffs avasalladores que queríamos compartir.
RC- ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de tocar con Monuments y Skyharbos, en septiembre del año pasado?
ATE- Desgraciadamente, el show no se pudo hacer por varios problemas con las visas de las bandas que giraban en un principio y se tuvo que posponer, pero al final se terminó cancelando debido a esta pandemia global. Esperamos tener la chance de tocar con ellos si llegan a volver a nuestro pueblo.
RC- ¿Cómo ven la escena de metal en Ontario? ¿Cuáles bandas recomendarían?
ATE- Realmente increíble, todos estuvimos creciendo musicalmente desde la secundaria y nos está dando muchas experiencias gratificantes que dejaron hacer lo que ahora hacemos con Abrade The Earth. Honestamente, recomendaría todas las bandas ya que todas son muy únicas y pueden encontrar prácticamente cualquier subgénero de metal dependiendo tus gustos, pero si tengo que nombrar algunas, las que se nos vienen a la cabeza son: The Aphelion, Horcrux, Words Like Wildfire, Salem Trails, The Parallel, Iliad, The Northern, Killitorous y los chicos de Sinful Ways.
RC- ¿Conocen algo de Sudamérica o Argentina?
ATE- Así es, desde cierto contexto sobre todo con Centroamérica. Nuestro bajista es centroamericano y tenemos varios amigos y familia de diversas locaciones por lo que tenemos la suerte de conocer bastante de cultura y comida latina. Ottawa y Ontario en general, es un lugar multicultural donde vayas, así que se puede conocer gente de distintos lados del planeta, aunque referido a lo que sean bandas y música, nos falta conocer aún. Nos encantaría visitar algún día y vivir todo con nuestros propios ojos.
RC- ¿Cuáles son sus pensamientos acerca el presente del metalcore progresivo de hoy en día?
ATE- Creemos que día a día está creciendo con muchísimo potencial y bandas compartiendo su particular y propia manera de hacer prog y metalcore, que tanto nos hace bien desde que empezamos a escuchar el género. Yo (Luis) pienso que es excitante cada vez que una nueva banda aparece con algo que nadie haya hecho antes o con algo ya hecho, pero con más energía y su desarrollo de hacer un estribillo pegadizo que signifique algo para ellos o instrumentalmente de esa manera. Hay mucho talento allá afuera y esperamos poder compartir escenario con muchos músicos increíbles que salen cada vez en esta escena, lo que ayuda a que inspirarnos a continuar y pasarla bien con nuestra música.
RC- ¿Cuáles son sus planes para el resto del año?
ATE- Por ahora lo principal es intentar sacar un par de canciones más antes de que termine el año. Tenemos un nuevo single que salió el 25 de septiembre llamado «The Cycle» que lo pueden escuchar en todas las plataformas digitales. Esperamos también arrancar el año que viene con más composiciones.
RC- ¿Cómo están viviendo estos extraños tiempos mundiales? ¿De qué manera afectó a la banda?
ATE- Definitivamente son muy difíciles para cada uno de manera tanto individual como grupal ya que estamos cercanos a una segunda oleada donde vivimos, así que sobrellevar estos tiempos se ha vuelto un ajuste. Directamente no afectó mucho a la banda ya que no estábamos de gira pero nos arreglamos con videochats vs las reuniones en persona y tantos shows agendados que se tuvieron que cancelar. Además al ser una banda independiente nuestra manera de trabajar nunca se ralentizó, así que por ahora estamos bien.

Q. How was the composition process for the EP you released last year?
A. The composition process was relatively slow in the beginning, as we were all trying to figure out our sound and style for our debut release. Once we determined what we wanted to sound like, the rest came relatively easy since we’ve all got previous experience with being in metal bands. We did a lot of experimenting with different musical elements such as synths, pianos, spacey reverb’s, samples and more. We found what we were happy with, and what would set us apart from other bands.
Q. How did you come up with the name Abrade The Earth?
A. I (Jared) was in high school and I knew that I wanted to be in a band. In my notebook, I would write down my favourite band names to be used in the future, and Abrade The Earth was at the top of that list. I claimed the Facebook username because I wanted to reserve it for future use. James noticed the URL on my page and asked what it was. Soon after I told him, the decision to use the name was made.
Q. What are your feelings about «Vague Light»? Where did you get the influences for the lyrics? And how would you compare it with the songs of the first EP?
A. Vague light was inspired by the existential dread many feel when they reach a crossroads in life. The song is from the perspective of someone who initially believes they are beyond redemption and doomed to a meaningless existence of suffering. As the song develops, the main character is brought back from their despair by an ambiguous sense of hope that comes with self-forgiveness and acceptance. It’s an important song for us because it expresses feelings we’ve all experienced at different points in our lives. It takes a more grounded approach compared to our first EP, which used a lot more fantasy imagery but despite being more lyrically realistic, we brought the spectacle to the instrumental and made some pummeling riffs that got us so stoked to share!
Q.How was the experience of playing with Monuments and Skyharbor, last year’s september?
A. Unfortunately, the show did not happen as there where some issues with the visa’s for touring bands at first and had to be postponed but in the end, it was also cancelled due to the pandemic that happened globally this year but we do hope we get the chance to play a show with them if they ever come to town again!
Q. How do you see the metal scene in Ontario? Which bands would you recommend?
A. The metal scene in Ontario is really great! we’ve all grown up in it musically since high school and it’s giving us lots of good experiences that have allowed us to do what we do today with Abrade The Earth. Honestly, we’d recommend all of them they all are so unique and you can find mainly any type of sub-genre that falls under metal depending on your tastes but if we had to name a few off the top of our heads we’d say The Aphelion, Horcrux, Words Like Wildfire, Salem Trails, The Parallel, Iliad, The Northern, Killitorous and the boys in Sinful Ways.
Q. Do you know anything about South America or Argentina?
A. Yeah we are familiar with South America to a certain extent as well as Central America actually. Our bassist is from Central America and we have some friends and family from those locations so we’ve been lucky enough to familiarize ourselves with the Latin food and culture. Ottawa and Ontario, in general, is a very multicultural place so wherever you are, you can always meet people from different places around the world, although when it comes to the metal scene we don’t have too much experience on how it is over there. We’d love to go visit one day and see it in person if we get the chance though.
Q. What are your thoughts about the current prog metalcore movement nowadays?
A. When it comes to the current prog and metalcore movement we feel it’s growing more and more each day with a lot of potential and many different bands sharing there own form of prog/metalcore that we’ve all grown up with and love. I(Luis) think it’s exciting whenever a new band comes out with something that’s never been done before or even with something that’s been done before but with more energy and everyone’s own form of what a catchy chorus means to them or instrumentally for that matter. There is a lot of talent out there and we honestly hope we get to share the stage with all these amazing musicians coming out in our scene one day as they inspire us to keep going and have fun with what we are doing with our music.
Q. What are your plans for the rest of the year?
A. As of right now we’re hoping to release some more music for the rest of the year. We have a new single that came out on Friday (09/25/2020) so aside from the new release, we got a good amount of plans to end the year off, as well as begin the new year on a good note with some more music.
Q. How are you coping with these strange times worldwide? In which way has this affected Abrade The Earth?
A. These times have definitely been hard for us to a certain extent personally as we’re getting closer to a second wave where we are, so coping with the times has been an adjustment. As of right now, it hasn’t affected the band to much as we aren’t a touring act as of yet but it for sure has consisted of more video chats vs in-person meetings and the local shows that we were booked for we’re unfortunately cancelled. We also are a self-produced band so when it comes to our workflow it actually hasn’t slowed down the work process musical too much, so it’s been okay for now.
