Hablamos con 鬼, la mente detrás de la música de Unreqvited, uno de los proyectos de post black metal / blackgaze más vigentes e innovadores de la segunda década del nuevo milenio. Desde Canadá, nos comunicamos para saber del lanzamiento de “Empathica”, su nuevo disco de estudio y más.

¿Cómo fue la composición de “Mosaic II: La Déteste Et La Détresse”? ¿Cuál es el mensaje que querés difundir con estas canciones?
“Mosaic II” fue escrito conjuntamente con “Mosaic I”, y el proceso compositivo para esos dos álbumes fue más que nada un experimento terapéutico para mí. Todas las emociones positivas que sentí a lo largo del 2018 fueron para la primera parte y todo lo negativo para la segunda. “Mosaic II” salió mucho después, pero lo terminé en 2018
¿Cómo te sentís respecto a cada disco que editaste?
Los miro con nostalgia, todavía disfruto muchísimo escucchar cada uno de ellos de vez en cuando. “Disquiet” fue el gran pilar para el núcleo del sonido de Unreqvited. “Stars Wept” trajo consigo mucho de los elementos sinfónicos que luego pasarían a ser algo indispensable en todos mis discos. Las dos partes de “Mosaic” fueron una gran dirección para mí para adentrarme en lares más cercanos al post rock y oscuros, canciones más experimentales en sí. Y “Empathica” es una suerte de regreso a los días de “Disquiet / Stars Wept” con nuevos elementos, como la adición de voces limpias.
¿Qué recordás de la grabación de “Disquiet” en 2016?
Fue el primer material que intentara grabar completamente por mí mismo. No tenía la menor idea de qué estaba haciendo, pero a medida que lo creaba, aprendía muchísimo. La producción del disco no es muy buena, pero creo que eso le agrega cierto encanto. Pasaron solamente cuatro años, aunque en mi opinión, las canciones han crecido bastante bien y los fans de Unreqvited al parecer les encanta ese lanzamiento. Estoy feliz por haber decidido comenzar con la creación de este proyecto unipersonal, porque cambió mi vida de manera muy positiva. No tengo ningún plan en detener esto, es mi outlet creativo principal.
¿Cómo creaste el concepto de ambas partes de Mosaic?
Los últimos 5 años fueron de muchos altibajos en lo personal, y quería intentar algo que me ayudara a convivir con la montaña rusa que es la vida. Decidií al principio del 2018 (ni bien terminé de escribir Stars Wept), que para el próximo año iba a depositar toda mi energía positiva en un disco y toda mi energía negativa en otro. Para Mosaic I, fueron los sentimientos de cada vez que sentí amor, euforia y alegría. Y para Mosaic II, fueron mi furia, ansiedad y cada vez que me sentí abatido, y de todas esas emociones juntas nació esa segunda parte.
¿Qué pensás del presente de la música extrema en estos momentos? ¿Cuáles discos del 2020 estuviste escuchando?
Prácticamente vivo en mi pequeño mundo, así que a veces no estoy muy al tanto de todo lo nuevo que sale. Aunque debo decir, que este año se editaron algunos discos que me parecieron muy buenos. Algunas de las bandas que estuve escuchando mucho y que me encanta lo que editaron son: Nightwish, Loathe, Dark Fortress, Sojourner y An Autumn For Crippled Children.
¿Cómo estás lidiando con toda esta situación de la pandemia mundial? ¿En qué afecta a Unreqvited?
Vivo en cuarentena de igual manera, aún sin que sea obligatoria, así que estoy bastante bien preparado para esto. A veces es un poco deprimente el estar las 24 horas del día en mi cuarto, pero al menos puedo concentrarme en escribir nueva música.
¿Conocés algo sobre Argentina o Sudamérica?
Estoy seguro que conozco bastante, pero normalmente no recuerdo de dónde son muchas de las bandas que escucho. Las dos únicas bandas que se me vienen a la cabeza cuando pienso en Sudamérica son Sepultura y Angra, que los escuchaba mucho cuando era más jóven.

– How was the composition process for «Empathica» and «Mosaic II: La Déteste Et La Détresse»? Which is the message you want to spread with those songs?
Mosaic II was written together with Mosaic I, and the composition process for those 2 albums was more of a therapy experiment for myself. All of the positive emotions I felt over the course of 2018 went into Mosaic I and all of the negative emotions went into Mosaic II. Mosaic II came out way later, but it was finished back in 2018.
– What do you feel about every record you’ve released?
I look back on the old albums with nostalgia, I still very much enjoy listening to them every now and then. Disquiet was a great foundation for the core sound of Unreqvited. Stars Wept brought in a lot of the symphonic elements that are definitely going to be prominent in all of Unreqvited’s records. The 2 Mosaic albums were a great way for me to experiment with more joyful post-rock songs and much darker, more experimental songs. Empathica is a return-form to the Disquiet/Stars Wept days with a few new elements, such as the addition of clean vocals.
– What do you remember about recording «Disquiet» back in ´16?
It was the very first thing I ever tried to record by myself. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was learning a lot. The album’s production isn’t very good, but I think that adds a nice charm to it. It’s only been 4 years but I think the songs have aged very well, and the fans of Unreqvited all seem to love that album. I’m happy I decided to experiment with the creation of a solo project, because it’s changed my life in so many positive ways. It is my main creative outlet that I don’t have any plans of stopping any time soon.
– How did you come up with the concept for both parts of Mosaic?
The past 5 years have been filled with many highs and lows for me, and I wanted to try something that would help me cope with the roller coaster that is life. I decided at the beginning of 2018 (as soon as I finished writing Stars Wept) that for the next year I would put all of my positive energy into one album and all of my negative energy into another. Any time I felt joy/love/euphoria, I spilled those feelings into Mosaic I. Any time I felt anger/anxiety/despondency, I would let those emotions piece together what became Mosaic II.
– What do you think about the current moment of extreme music nowadays? Which 2020 records have you’ve been listening to?
I kind of live in my own little world, so I don’t always keep up with everything new that’s coming out. This year there are a few metal albums that I thought were really good, though. A few bands that have put out great records this year are: Nightwish, Loathe, Dark Fortress, Sojourner, An Autumn for Crippled Children.
– How are you dealing with this whole situation of the Covid-19 worldwide? How it does affect Unreqvited?
I quarantine myself every day anyway, so I’m quite well-adjusted for this. It gets depressing at times to be in my room 24/7, but at least I can focus on writing music.
– Do you know any bands from Argentina or South America?
I’m sure I know quite a lot, but I don’t normally remember where a lot of bands are from. The only two form South America I can think of off the top of my head that I listened to a lot when I was younger were Sepultura and Angra.
